The Housing Choice Voucher (formerly Section 8) Housing Assistance Payment program is designed to assist eligible low-income families pay their rent. Participants pay 30% of their adjusted gross income to the landlord for rent. The balance of the contract rent is paid by the Housing Authority directly to the owner of the property.

More than 6,000 owners of rental properties participate in the Housing Choice Voucher program. The owner is expected to provide all management and maintenance services. The City and County Housing Authority has over 12,000 families participating in the Housing Choice Voucher program.

The Housing Choice Voucher program is funded by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). The purpose of the program is to provide rental subsidy to very low-income families. A portion of the family's monthly rent is paid directly to the landlord by the Housing Authority.
